Atatürk Olympic Stadium
The home of the Turkish national team, the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul is the country's largest stadium, named in honour of Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, opened in 2002.
In 2005, the stadium hosted the ‘legendary’ 2005 Champions League final, so-called "The Miracle of Istanbul" in which Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties after having drawn 3-3 in regular time.
Atatürk Olympic Stadium has been granted the "5-star sports complex" title by the UEFA in 2004, proving to be a competent host for the finals of UEFA events with its 76,092 (all-seater) capacity and Olympic size. The stadium has hosted several European athletic competitions and certified by the IAAF and IOC as a first-class venue for track and field.
Atatürk Olympic Stadium is located far out of central Istanbul in a semi-urban area on the north-western edge of the city of Istanbul at more than 20 kilometres from the city centre. It lies adjacent to the O-3 motorway.
